Rosehill College offers a vibrant and diverse Arts and Culture programme, providing students with numerous opportunities to excel in various disciplines, from visual arts and music to drama and kapa haka. With a history of national achievements and strong community involvement, students are encouraged to showcase their talents both locally and internationally.

Performing Arts

Music benefits the brain by fostering creativity, individualism, self-expression, language acquisition, self-confidence, self-discipline, and team-building skills, while bringing joy and fulfilment to learners.

Music Courses

We offer courses at all levels for vocalists and instrumentalists, accommodating both students who can read music and those who cannot. Students enrolled in Music courses can receive free weekly vocal or instrumental lessons from expert itinerant music teachers (subject to availability).

Co-Curricular Music Groups

All students are encouraged to join co-curricular music groups once they reach the necessary level. Our music groups include:

Concert Band: Includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, bass guitar, drumkit, auxiliary percussion, mallet percussion, and timpani. They perform festival pieces, film and TV music, show music, and jazz, with rehearsals every Wednesday after school. Performances include the KBB Music Festival, Music Department concerts, and Prize Giving ceremonies.
Stage Band: Includes clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit, and auxiliary percussion. They play jazz, rock, funk, and Latin, rehearsing on Mondays after school. Performances include the KBB Music Festival, Music Department concerts, assemblies, and the Arts and Cultural Awards evening.
Smoke-free Tangata Beats & Rock Quest Bands: Open to musicians and singers interested in participating in these competitions.
Choir: Rehearsals are held during lunchtime and all singers are welcome.
Show Band: Includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit, auxiliary percussion, mallet percussion, and timpani. Rehearsals occur primarily in term two, with performances at the Hawkins Theatre in term three. The band accompanies the school musical, with past shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, Westside Story, Man of La Mancha, Little Shop of Horrors, Big Al, Grease, Fiddler on the Roof, Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Addams Family.
Tour Band and Singers: Includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit, auxiliary percussion, mallet percussion, timpani, and singers. They rehearse on Tuesdays (and some Thursdays), performing at Music Department concerts and various venues. Past tours include performances within New Zealand (Cambridge, Tauranga, Rotorua, Wellington, and the South Island) and overseas (Sydney, Argentina, Malaysia, Singapore, and China).
Junior Prize Giving Band: Includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, bass guitar, drumkit, auxiliary percussion, mallet percussion, and timpani. They rehearse during the school day after junior exams, with performances at the Junior Prize Giving ceremonies.
Various Ensembles: Include rock groups, drum line, flute group, clarinet ensemble, saxophone quartet, and chamber groups, depending on student availability.

Itinerant Music Lessons

We offer lessons in flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit, and vocals for students enrolled in a full-year Music course. While we strive to accommodate all students, availability may be limited and some students may be placed on a waiting list.

Creative Arts

The Art Department at Rosehill College boasts a long tradition of academic excellence. Housed in a modern, centrally-designed building, it features four purpose-built art rooms, two computer suites, a printing bay, and a photographic studio, providing excellent facilities for students.

Our department is both large and vibrant, benefiting from the expertise of specialist staff and the diversity of courses offered. Junior programmes lay a solid foundation in both creative and technical skills, while senior students can choose from five visual art disciplines: painting, photography, design, printmaking, and sculpture. Additionally, art history is available at Levels 1, 2, and 3.

Each year, many students from the department pursue tertiary qualifications or careers in the creative arts. The work of our students is celebrated through four annual exhibitions showcasing both junior and senior achievements within the school calendar.
